About the National Capital Regional Chapter

For the past year, EERI colleagues in the Washington, DC area and the surrounding states of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia have been considering forming a regional chapter to further EERI’s earthquake risk reduction mission in the region, nation, and worldwide.  On March 12, 2012 planning for such a proposed chapter was significantly advanced during a meeting of EERI members held at the Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute in Arlington, Virginia. One of the outcomes of that meeting was the formation of a chapter organizing committee. The National Capital Regional Chapter is now a reality and will host its inaugural chapter meeting on December 7, 2012.

The National Capital Chapter accepts eligible persons for membership from Washington, DC, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. The formation of the National Capital Chapter enables EERI to mobilize and use the vast scientific and technical talent in academic, corporate, and policy institutions in the region and also helps provide needed access to such critical institutions located there as federal agencies, Congress, and international bodies that play key decision making roles regarding seismic safety and related issues.
